Study Abroad: Maymester 2010
Growth in student participation in study abroad programs and international students hosted by Georgia State continued in 2001-2002 with 1,677 international students enrolled at Georgia State and 441 Georgia State students participating in study abroad programs.
This year the Department is offering two study abroad courses during the Maymester; the one in Medical Virology at the National Universty of Cordoba, Cordoba, Argentina (hosted By Dr. Teryl Frey, and the other in Environmental Immunology, Venice Italy (hosted by Dr. Roberta Attanasio).

Again, as last year, Medical Virology will be offered at the Dr. J.M. Vanella Institute of Virology, a division of the School of Medicine of the National University of Cordoba. The course will be instructed by Dr. Teryl Frey of Georgia State University and Dr. Pilar Adamo of the National University of Cordoba. The language of instruction is English. The course will focus on human viruses and the diseases they cause, their diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention. Students will also participate in a wet lab emphasizing techniques in virus diagnosis and hear presentations on medically-related research ongoing at the Institute of Virology and on public health issues of importance to Argentina. The course will be cross listed at the undergraduate and graduate levels and an Honors section will be provided.
The National University of Cordoba (UNC) is the second oldest university in the western hemisphere, founded by Jesuits in 1613. Cordoba, a city of ~1 million, is the traditional center of learning in Argentina and the student population makes up 10% of the city’s population. Most of the university students live in the area of the city called “Nueva Cordoba,” and students in the course will have the chance to experience Argentinean student life in this urban setting. To enhance the experience, the course will begin with a three day “immersion” in elementary Spanish and Argentine culture and history prior to the Medical Virology course. A companion program is available that pairs course participants with University of Cordoba students with similar interests for activities outside the course. Students in the course will also meet medical students from the University of Cordoba.
The province of Cordoba in central Argentina features a rich history that includes several 400 year old Jesuit missions that were important in the Spanish settlement and is the childhood home of the famous revolutionary, Che Guevara. Weekend excursions will explore this history, including a tour of the Jesuit Quarter in Cordoba and a day trip to the city of Alta Gracia, with tours of a Jesuit mission and the Che Guevara museum, and Villa General Belgrano, a mountain resort. The Jesuit Quarter in Cordoba and Jesuit mission in Alta Gracia are both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Students in the course will also be in Cordoba during the national independence
Environmental Immunology
Dr. Attanasio: (404) 413 5397
As last year, Environmental Immunology will be offered during Maymester in Venice, Italy.
The objective of this course is to provide students with an overview of the immune system and its interaction with environmental factors as well as to familiarize students with the primary literature in environmental immunology and with immunological laboratory techniques that can be used to detect environmental pollutants and toxins. At the end of the course, students should be able to synthesize key concepts in immunology, environmental health and environmental immunology, understand the general picture of the immune response within the context of interactions with environmental factors and critically discuss research articles focusing on studies related to the topic of the course. Students will also design immunological assays for the detection of specific toxins and pollutants and prepare, through team work, a final paper that will critically describe all different assays.
