Biology Headlines

Recents Student Accomplishments Spring 2006

  • Kelli Duncan, a PhD student in the laboratory of Laura Carruth,was invited to attend and presented a poster on Sex Differences in Sex steroid coactivator, L7/SPA in Zebra Finch Song Control Nuclei. She also received a travel award to attend the festival.
    On May 11-12th, 2006 the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Division of Intramural  
    Research Programs conducted its first annual Pre-doctoral Research Festival, in which 71 neuroscience Ph.D. candidates from across the United States attened to showcase their talents through poster and oral presentations and learn more about the research being conducted at the NIMH. Students were given opportunities to meet with current post-doctoral Fellows and top NIMH Scientists to discuss the science being conducted throughout the Division of Intramural Programs and to learn about opportunities for post- doctoral researchers at NIMH.

  • Kristy Welshhans, a graduate student in Dr. Vincent Rehder's laboratory, will be presenting her research in Vienna, Austria this July at the 5th Forum of European Neuroscience, which is organized by the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS).  She will be presenting a poster entitled "Short-term stimulation of growth cones with nitric oxide elicits long-term changes in intracellular calcium via cADPR and ryanodine receptor-mediated calcium release."  Kristy won 2 travel awards to attend this meeting, one from the German Neuroscience Society and another from the Society for Neuroscience.

  • Prajakta Pradhan, a graduate student in Dr Parjit Kaur's lab was invited to present at the "Membrane Protein Synthesis, insertion, and Assembly Symposium" at the ASBMB (American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) meeting held in San Francisco from April 1-4th, 2006.
    She won an award for best graduate student presentaion. The award includes a certificate and a cash prize of $500.
    Both Prajakta Pradhan and Divya Rao also got a travel award of $700 each to attend this meeting

  • James Newcomb, a graduate assistant in Dr. Paul Katz lab will be defending his dissertation this summer, has also obtained an assistant professor position at New England College in Henneman, New Hampshire.

  • Katie Dugan received 1st Place in the the Georgia Science Fair for high school students in the field of Zoology, based on research that she performed in the laboratory of Dr. Charles Derby (Biology, GSU).  The title of her work is "The Smell of Fear: Specificity of Alarm Cue Signaling Through Inking by Sea Hares".  She will be participating in the International Science and Engineering Fair on May 6-12 in Indiana.
